Reusing traditional methods
Although the popularity of fat transplantation is a relatively recent development in facial rejuvenation, the concept of fat transfer is not new. As early as 1893, free fat autografts were used to fill a soft tissue defect. The use of autologous abdominal fat to correct deficits in the malar area and chin was reported in 1909. Throughout the early part of the 20th century, attempts were made to correct other conditions, including hemifacial atrophy and breast defects, but modern fat grafting did not develop until the early 1980s with the evolution of liposuction.
Aging results in loss of subcutaneous tissue, which is amenable to replacement by fat grafting. Indications for fat grafting include correction of atrophy due to aging or scarring and enhancement of facial elements such as correcting glabellar frown lines or providing fuller, more youthful cheeks.
Treatment and results
Fat transfer fills facial features with a patient’s own fat. Basically, fat transfer involves suctioning out a small amount of fat from the abdomen, thighs, flank or back and moving this fat into the facial areas such as laugh lines, frown lines, lips and cheeks. Because the fat comes from your own body, you cannot develop an allergic reaction. Fat transfer to the face is a safe procedure designed to re-contour the face and provide definition to cheeks, chin, lips and lower eyes. We perform this procedure alone or in conjunction with our other facial rejuvenation procedures. When it comes to facial volume loss, micro fat transfer is the treatment of choice. A minor liposuction technique is used to prepare the fat for transfer. The fat is then injected in the desired portion of the face, using small parcels of fat that are strategically layered to maximize appearance and graft survival for optimal aesthetic outcome. Autologous tissue is readily available, long-lasting, natural-feeling and will not cause adverse reactions.
