The recent increase in the popularity of microneedling has been primarily due to the number of benefits people who choose this cosmetic procedure enjoy. Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling not only helps give the facial skin a smoother appearance but also diminishes the visual signs of aging. This includes less prominent age spots, acne scars and fine lines and wrinkles. Microneedling helps boost collagen production, resulting in skin that is much suppler and more elastic.
Candidates for Microneedling
Adults who experience smile lines, crow’s feet and other small, dynamic wrinkling of the facial skin can benefit from microneedling. As we age and mature, our skin shows signs of problems that occurred earlier in life. Injury scars and blemishes often become more prominent even though they already existed when we were younger. Creating healthy new skin tissue through the production of tiny, controlled microchannels is how microneedling can help smooth the skin and make it more even in tone.
About the Procedure
There isn’t one single method for performing this procedure. When we consult with our client, we examine the face closely and make note of the location, severity and depth of any discolorations. We also determine the actual skin thickness in areas where discolorations and wrinkles exist. This allows us to choose the proper instrument for performing skin needling.
Some of the instruments used are pen-shaped and topped with a disposable tip that contains about a dozen needles. We’ll choose one that has needles of the proper thickness and length. This is determined by the thickness of the skin in the area to be treated. The instrument is pressed against the skin after a topical gel has been applied for your comfort.
During the treatment, the device is rolled across a section of skin several times until the desired number of microchannels are created.
Healing and Skin Rejuvenation
We usually schedule multiple treatment sessions, each spaced several weeks apart. This gives the skin time to heal over and for new tissue to develop. The next few treatments are actually more effective because the body uses the newer, healthier tissues as a template.
About two or three months after the final treatment session, the client notices smoother skin that is much more elastic. Collagen production has steadily increased, so the skin is thicker, holds moisture better and is much more evenly toned.
Additional Benefits
Because of the increase in collagen in the skin, clients will notice that enlarged pores are no longer a problem. Wrinkles that form when facial expressions are made become much less visible. Injury scars don’t vanish completely, but the healthier epidermal layer makes these less visible as well.
