A traditional facelift is generally performed by making a long incision in front of each ear and pulling the facial skin upward. Excess skin is removed, and the incision is closed. Many individuals with sagging facial skin are told by their doctor that a more specialized, local fix is all that is necessary to restore the face to its more youthful appearance. Popularly known as a Y LIFT® or lunchtime lift, this procedure involves injecting hyaluronic acid through the skin. No incisions are made, and the solution is injected into strategic points between the bones, muscle tissue, and skin.
An instrument is placed beneath the skin, which then allows the doctor to lift the fat and muscles found just beneath the skin. This is an outpatient cosmetic treatment that requires no incisions or stitches. The reason it’s called a Y LIFT® is because it is intended to restore the natural Y shape of the face. In other words, sagging and folding of the skin are corrected.
Causes of Sagging Skin
It is true that sagging skin is caused by excess fatty tissue. However, as we age, our skull actually changes shape. Most peoples’ skulls lengthen slightly as they age, and this contributes to the loss of the natural Y shape of the face. The arms of the Y broaden out, and natural curves that gave the face its youthful shape become less obvious.
The loss of collagen in and beneath the skin is another cause of sagging and drooping. The underlying support tissues are not as strong as they once were, so the result is saggy skin that is much less firm and supple. Individuals with skin folds on the lower face and upper neck are prime candidates for a Y LIFT®.
How the Y LIFT® Helps Restore a Youthful Appearance
At ProMD Health, we first consult with the client and examine the face to see what is causing any sagging and drooping of the skin. If the culprit is lowered amounts of collagen, the Y LIFT® may be the best option. In most cases, we will recommend a filler injection. This filler is a gel that contains hyaluronic acid. The client feels little to no discomfort. The procedure generally takes from between 30 minutes to an hour.
The full plumping effect will not be complete for about two days. The hyaluronic acid draws in moisture, and this fills out the area significantly. It’s important to remember that this is not the same procedure as the popular dermal filler treatments for smoothing out fine line wrinkles around the eyes or on the lips. The gel is injected far deeper during a Y LIFT® procedure, and the fat and muscles beneath the skin are raised, creating more shape and volume in the face.
There is no downtime after the treatment is complete, hence the lunchtime lift terminology. The effects last for up to two years or more, long after the gel itself is flushed from the body.
